Lanchester Table Tennis Club
Lanchester Table Tennis Club was founded in 2007 by local teacher Frank Clark, who recognised the need for a community sports club that could be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. Nearly two decades later, the club continues to thrive and has become an important part of village life.
Today, the club boasts more than 30 members, including 13 junior players. With members ranging in age from 10 to their 70s, the club prides itself on being welcoming, inclusive and accessible to everyone. Players travel from across the Consett area to take part, whether they are experienced competitors looking to sharpen their skills or complete beginners picking up a bat for the first time.
While enjoyment and participation remain at the heart of the club, there is also a healthy competitive spirit. Lanchester currently fields three teams in the Sunderland Winter League and two teams in the Northumberland Summer League. Reflecting the village's rich Roman heritage, the teams compete under the names The Centurians, The Praetorians and The Cohorts.
The club meets every Friday evening at Lanchester Community Centre. Junior coaching sessions run from 6pm to 7pm, with club play for all members from 7pm until 9pm. On a typical club night, up to five tables are in use, creating a lively atmosphere as players of all ages test their skills, share advice and enjoy friendly competition.
More than just a sports club, Lanchester Table Tennis Club provides an opportunity for people to stay active, make new friends and become part of a supportive community. The strong number of junior members also ensures that the future of the club looks bright, with a new generation of players already developing their skills and passion for the sport.
